As an additional measure of protection, it is good to take precautions in special high risk situations. High risk viral areas are:
Laser Typesetting Bureaus
University Computing Centers
Any High Traffic, Public Use Computers
When using any Mac that fits in these areas, be sure to check your disks when coming back. Open up your virus checking software and check the disk first thing.

Many Laser Typesetting Shops demonstrate a “Gee, what can we do” type attitude towards viruses and as a result are CONSTANTLY infected. I have been in three of these places in the last three months and all three were infected. It burns me because there ARE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT PUBLIC USE MACHINES. Do us all a favor and browbeat these guys if you find an infected machine. If you find an owner that keeps his machines clean and cares about the virus problem, praise him and tell your friends about his shop. This kind of “gee whiz” apathy on the part of copy shop owners is causing a lot of people grief.
